What to do in a
medical emergency.

First, if there is a life threatening medical emergency,

Call 9-1-1 immediately.

Stay on the line and follow all advice. Give your name, the name of the person in crisis, and your location.

If you have selected a medical alarm or panic button as a feature of your overall security system, and you are hurt or sick and cannot get to the phone, use your medical alarm or panic button.

First Aid.
In the event of a serious medical emergency, the 9-1-1 operator may direct you to administer first aid. If the operator is giving directions, follow them exactly.

If you are dealing with a non-9-1-1 (life threatening, very serious) injury or medical issue, this is where first aid training comes in handy. St. Johns Ambulance is a trusted leader in offering first aid training. Here is a link to their course schedule.

It's so easy to learn basic first aid and CPR, take a minute to get started by scheduling your training session.

Medications?
If you or a family member has a medical condition and you have life-saving medication to treat it in case of emergencies, make sure every household member who is responsible enough has access to it, knows how to administer it correctly, and knows what to do in terms of follow-up care.

For example, heart medication should be accessible to the patient and those who can offer assistance. Anyone assisting should know how to administer the medication, and what signs to look for in case 9-1-1 should be called. The same should be considered for athsma medication, epi-pens, and any other important home treatments.

If you are ever unsure that a patient is responding to the usual treatment, call 9-1-1.

What if you suspect someone is has ingested poison?
If someone might be poisoned, and no immediate life-threatening symptoms are present, call Ontario's Poison Control Centre at 1-800-268-9017. Save this number, and post it near your telephone in case of emergency.

If someone has been poisoned and there are serious symptoms present, call 9-1-1.

Never attempt to administer treatment without professional guidance. Do not allow the patient to have water until you have spoken to a professional. Some cases of poisoning can be alleviated by flushing the system with water, for example, while other cases of poisoning will be worsened by ingesting water. Seek professional guidance and care.
